Martial Arts Stuff

Since the last post has gone stale, and I really don't have much to talk about, I'll just go with one of my favorite subjects--MMA! ;P

I was watching a highlights compilation the other night and this beautiful KO kick by Vitor Belfort caught my full attention. I'm not much for spinning techniques myself as I'm primarily a Wing Chun practitioner and we're all about economy of motion, but other disciplines and styles do spinning techniques. (The only time I'll do a spinning anything is if I throw a roundhouse with extra mustard on it and the momentum spins me too far. Then I'll continue the spin with a back fist just for good measure. ;P ) I believe the fluffy description for this one in Chinese translates to "Dragon whips his tail." What caught my attention mainly was how perfectly executed this technique was. Vitor torqued his body first and let his leg whip very relaxed. All the power was derived from his core and flowed through his leg in a perfect whipping motion. It was beautiful to watch.

And another thing I discovered while web searching when bored is that The Queen is also a Bruce Lee fan. LOL The ironic thing is I just happened to be wearing my old Bruce Lee t-shirt while discovering that little tidbit.  ;)

Oh? Wen did you last partake in a WC fight?

The Queen is also a Bruce Lee fan.

Oh *that* Queen. Before I clicked on the link I thought you meant the British monarch. :)

I don't remember too many details at this point, just that I was at a wedding and then I was in Hong Kong buying some serious finger bling. I'm hoping that's another one of those "prophetic" ones cuz Hong Kong and bling takes moolah and if I'm there doing that then I must have some serious moolah in the future! ;P Oh, and at some point you were driving a car and did a Finnish Flick. ;P

Oh? Wen did you last partake in a WC fight?

Probably 25 years ago. ;D

I *do* remember learning to do spinning back kicks/hook kicks, though. We didn't just learn Wing Chun. But I'm pretty stubborn with the 'don't turn your back on your opponent' thing. Spinning techniques just aren't my forte.

Before I clicked on the link I thought you meant the British monarch. :)

She's probably one, too! ;P

Hm, so I was either racing or making a movie in Finland. Or both. :)

But I'm pretty stubborn with the 'don't turn your back on your opponent' thing.

It appears you like other people performing them though. ;P

Nah, you were supposed to be picking me up from the wedding and were running late. The setting looked to be out in the country(like horse farms)and there were dirt roads. It was a spectacular way to turn onto the entry road to where I was. The only thing is, you were driving a hideous car. It looked to be some vintage thing. It was black.

It appears you like other people performing them though. ;P

They're certainly fun to watch! ;)

In other news, I am off to the old peeps in a bit. I feel like crap as I woke up at 6am to pee and then I couldn't get my brain to turn off(was reading different fanfics last night before bed and for some reason I started thinking about one that was about watching people sleep :/ ). Anyway, I *did* eventually fall back asleep but got back up at 11am still feeling like crap. Ah, well.

I'll let you know how it went when I get back. :)

Very well. B-day for a 90 y/o. A little more to it than the last one as this one had to be served at the table. May get another one from it. The peeps were well pleased. :)

B-day for a 90 y/o.

So it was a big party then?

How many colleagues do you work with these days? Are they nice people?

The latest Sherlock episode was pretty good BTW. Lots of fan service though. The writers must have been reading a lot of blogs and such. Next episode is tomorrow.

Whose wedding was it?

No idea. My friend C from h/s was there wearing some big poofy horrible dress and then started hugging me for an uncomfortably long time. I was thinking, 'I haven't seen you for like 20 years, WTF?' Then you made your impressive entrance and I was like, 'Thank God, *finally*! I can't wait to get the hell outta here!'

A Ford model T?

No, it looked like some old French thing.

So it was a big party then?

18 peeps, all old...like 80's and up. One old guy had had a stroke and had to have help getting around. They were all very nice but I couldn't help feeling how much it sucks getting old. :/

How many colleagues do you work with these days?

Myself and QoH.

Are they nice people?

I, of course, am magnificent! (and you can guess how QoH is ;P)

Oh, funny thing...the lady throwing the party for her husband last night complimented me on my makeup. LOL I went a touch more Evil Regal and got complimented for it. ;P It's funny cuz I've only recently been wearing makeup for work. I used to not wear any because it gets so incredibly hot with the kind of work I do. But going to peeps houses is a bit different as it's more personal and not dark and I like to look my best. She also said I don't look my age. I always like hearing that. ;D

Lots of fan service though. The writers must have been reading a lot of blogs and such.

OUAT writers should do more of that. Sigh, I miss watching that. I've watched several movies over the past week that had J-Mo, Ginny G, Robert Carlyle, Jaime Chung, and Emilie de Ravin. I'm wondering how many I'll have to see separately in movies before I can see them all together again? :/

And how are things in the Nether World? What have you been up to besides watching Sherlock? It got slightly chilly here yesterday and last night. Unfortunately, it didn't last long. Today is overcast and damp and not very cool. Not hot, but meh.

I've been playing my old Starcraft game a lot and I've been studying. The weather here is ridiculously warm for the time of year. I can hardly call it winter. Maybe there *is* something to that global warming thing...

Yeah, there's one that the date has been confirmed for several months now that'll need 6. Unfortunately, all the peeps who were good workers either moved away or are too old to do it any more. That should be fun trying to book that one. :/

How's the job market for catering companies these days.

Seems a couple companies that I refuse to work for have been cornering the market.

I'll be 46 in about 23 days :/

Yes, I know! ;D (I don't forget about such things. ;P)

Any special birthday requests ya want from me? ;P

Maybe it's an old fashioned style that older people like?

IDK, maybe. I guess I do mine like the old school silver screen way. I use a pancake foundation, blush, eye shadow, lip pencil + apply the lipstick with a brush instead of just smooshing it on direct from the lipstick. It makes it look perfect and it doesn't come off so easily. Good quality makeup brushes(real sable hair)make a difference IMO(just like with any masterpiece ;P).

On purpose or coincidentally?

Coincidence. Seems like every movie on recently has had someone from OUAT.

The weather here is ridiculously warm

Same here. It's very disappointing, isn't it?

Maybe there *is* something to that global warming thing...

Nah, I just think it's your close proximity to Brussels and all those politicians blowing hot air. ;P ;D

::rolls eyes:: It's a kind of foundation makeup that you apply with a damp sponge(I use a real sea sponge, not one of those crappy synthetic ones). It's seriously old school(used in theater/movies etc)and gives you a flawless looking complexion, not that I need a lot of help. ;P

I use Max Factor brand. Old school. ;D

Yes! I want my snow, dammit! :P

I want some too, dammit! (supposed to get down to high 40's in a couple days--I have to see it and feel it to believe it, though)

They should put some in Flanders--they get a crossfire from Brussels and The Hague. ;P

Yes, we did. We had ourselves a nice little thundering hail storm. Very refreshing. ;)

It's not that. It's just that much of the newer stuff is manufactured to be not good quality so you have to buy another one sooner. I like good stuff and not crap. Ya know, I still have an old Sony DVD carousel type player that is nearly 20 y/o that still works. It was made in Japan. All the electronics I ever owned that were made in Japan lasted a hell of a long time. All the new stuff is made in China as cheaply as possible and is utter crap.

a nice little thundering hail storm.

We haven't had one of those in a looooong time. How large were the hailstones?

Did they also give you some of the food after that last gig?

Yes. :)

There was one dish that they had called Yerushalmi kugel that I don't recall having before. QoH wanted me to look up the recipe on the internet. The calorie count and sugar content alone would make the angels weep. I had to work out almost an hour last night to try to offset the consequences of eating that. :/

There was also brisket, roasted chicken, broccoli kugel, an Israeli salad and a cucumber salad + apple pie and cherry pie.

The lady was very nice and invited us to eat but we told her we'd rather take our meal home so that's what we did. (It's kinda awkward to try to eat dinner while working. I'd rather take it home so I can enjoy it without interruption.)

What's the last Chinese made product that you've bought that was utter crap? Personally, I don't really care where it comes from. It doesn't have to last 20 years for me.

Not very large. Like peas.

Well, you could just make small ones. Like cup cakes. :)

In other news, I kinda like what they're doing with Sherlock but I also kinda miss how it used to be. The stories are more character than plot driven. More drama and comedy and less mystery. I miss the detective work.

A blender and a paper shredder come to mind. They broke after being hardly used.

Personally, I don't really care where it comes from.

I don't care too much where it comes from either, but I don't like paying for something that breaks after a few uses or clothes that the stitching starts coming undone or fading.

If you're going to have hail, that's the best kind to have. I remember one time at school we had a very heavy hail storm with that size stone. Afterward, they were blown in drifts like snow. It was pretty cool. :)

BTW, it got *cold* today! Woo-hoo!!! I think the high was like 56 or something. Unfortunately, it's only a one-shot. It'll be back to the 80's by Thursday. :/

In other news, my excellent strategy to out wait the price of something at Sam's has paid off. They had a waffle-knit henley in burgundy that I liked--a Eddie Bauer brand--but it was a little more money than I was willing to pay. They had a lot of them in various sizes and each time I went to that store it looked like that particular item wasn't selling very well. I figured they'd eventually have to mark them down after the holidays and maybe I'd get lucky and they'd still have my size by then.

Well, last night I had to go there to pick up a few things and lo and behold! The henleys were marked down to $6.81! Woot! So I got myself one! (I look pretty good in burgundy if I do say so myself! ;P)

Should I send along some Depends, too? ;D

I had a sudden burst of inspiration last night and got maybe halfway finished. Now I just have to come up with the rest of it. ;)

PS: How did you pick your glasses?

I've found that I look best with frames that are oval and somewhat elongated. I know the general shape that I like, so I go to places with a large selection. You have to try them on, though. They might look fine on the display but then horrible on you. Subtle differences in shape make a big difference in appearance, actually. Just try a bunch on until you find one that you like. And don't let the sales peeps talk you into the latest fad. I like classic designs that will look good for years. But since your just getting reading glasses, you really don't have to worry too much about that.

Ya know, I don't know if it's the same over there, but if your eyesight isn't too bad you can just pick up some cheap ones at a pharmacy. They usually have lower strength reading glasses fairly cheep.

Which is more or less what I've done. They're +1 reading glasses, rather plain as they had only few models. It's definitely an improvement when I'm reading a book or something.

Nah, it's just that it was supposed to be visible to certain peeps above a certain latitude(FL is waaaay too far south). Some peeps in northern parts of the US could see it last night. It seemed like you were far enough north. I was just wondering.

Are you making a statue of me out of your boogers?

No. I hope you aren't too disappointed. ;D I think you'll like it. ;)

How's life in other ways BTW?

While we had no AB, we *did* have an earthquake yesterday. Peeps down in Key West got the most of it and some peeps as far up as Broward Co. claimed that they felt it. I call bullshit. I wouldn't have had a clue if it wasn't for all the carrying-on on the news. I didn't feel anything here.

We also had a 60 ft long whale wash up on the beach in Boca Raton today. It looked to me like it had been dead for a while as there were lots of signs that other sea creatures had been eating on it. All the stormy weather recently likely helped to blow it on shore. I'm sure it must stink to high heaven. ;P

Also, there has been a lot of flooding up in Palm Beach county from all the storms lately. None here, though, as we are on a high spot. Yeah, a huge 28 ft elevation. ;P

Oh! Nearly forgot...got another thing for next Friday. :)

Last time we had an earthquake was maybe 20 years ago. A 3 on the Richter scale. The centre was somewhere in Limburg. It happened at night and we all woke up from it because the house was creaking and my bed was shaking (first and last time that ever happened :P ).

Yeah, a huge 28 ft elevation. ;P

Has Florida ever considered building dikes like the Netherlands?

got another thing for next Friday.

Great! :)

After some deliberating I decided to go to the optician anyway and have my eyes tested. Turns out that one eye needs a +1 lens and the other a +1.75 one. So I ordered some glasses there. They have a slightly more stylish frame than the cheap ones. Insurance covers this stuff once every couple of years (or once a year, I don't remember) apparently. I'll get my glasses on the 25th.

Grrrrr...I bet you can guess what happened to me all day Saturday...the fucking AT&T bullshit again. QoH had ordered a new set of cordless phones for the house around Christmas. I just got around to swapping them with the old ones a couple days ago. The new ones have big digital displays on them. So I get up this morning and do my routine, then go into QoH's bedroom to step on the scale. I look over at the new phone and the display said something to the effect of "check the line" so I figure 'Oh fucking hell, here we go again'. I picked up the phone and clicked it on and it was as dead as a door nail. Long story short, called the bastards yet again, but since it's a weekend, it'll be a repeat performance of the last time.

One thing though, it's a problem with the inside wiring this time...there was some critter damage to one of the wires outside. I fiddled around with the wiring in the box(now that QoH is in bed and not hovering) and am able to use the computer. :) I should be hired on as a tech. ;P

Anyhoo, my name is Xul and I'm an internet addict. I have been antsy and irritable all day like a junkie from not being able to use the internet. I was literally having anxiety symptoms. I'm having some Pisco and apple juice to calm me now(no hard cider, so I'm getting creative...tastes better with vodka, though ;P).

So!

A 3 on the Richter scale.

The one here was in the Florida Straits closer to Cuba. It was a 5.1 or something.

the house was creaking and my bed was shaking (first and last time that ever happened :P ).

When you get your B-day gift, you'll see the irony in that. ;P ;D

Has Florida ever considered building dikes like the Netherlands?

We have them all over. It's just that up in Palm Beach they got like 17 inches of rain in one day, so there was more water than the already saturated ground could absorb. It was mainly localized flooding and the news was just hyping it.

one eye needs a +1 lens and the other a +1.75 one.

That's pretty normal. One eye is usually better than the other.

I'll get my glasses on the 25th

Just in time for you to look the part for your B-day. ;P You'll be sending me a selfie of that, of course. ;P
