Critters love my back yard

I was supposed to post this last night but I got distracted with reading some posts on the PD forum.  Oh well.

Yesterday, when I let the dog go out back to do his business, there was a beautiful oriole in the tree about four meters from where I was standing.  I decided to run back into the house to grab my camera.  Of course, by the time I got back, the oriole had flown away.  There was also a white butterfly that I wanted to get a pic of, but that little bastard was too quick and wouldn't land on anything.  Bummer!

As I went to set my camera down on one of the patio chairs by the edge of the patio, a very long Everglades racer snake tore-ass into the sansevieria. (I just looked up the spelling for 'sansevieria' and it says it is also known as a 'snake plant'.  Oy!  No wonder the snakes love going in there! LOL) The thing was no more than half a meter in front of me and I never saw it until it moved.  Damn snakes always nearly give me a heart attack!

There was also a beautiful Giant Swallowtail butterfly buzzing the red flowers on that shrub thingy by the fence along with some of the regulars--those zebra striped ones.  I didn't bother getting a pic of any of them.  I figured it would just be easier to get some pics off the intertoobs.

The oriole was back again today except in my neighbor's tree this time.  I got a better look at it and determined that it is a Bullock's oriole and not a Baltimore oriole.

Here's yer pics off da innertoobs:

Well, those birds and butterflies sure are pretty :) Most of the birds over here are either brown or black. Some of the butterflies are pretty, I guess. We used to catch those as kids and keep them in jar for a while (we didn't let them die). I am officially jealous of your jungle garden ;)

I meant which carbs did you cut?

Bread, potatoes, rice, just anything that contains carbs.

Today was a bit special. I went to my middle nephew's grade school musical. It's his last year on this school and the plan is that he'll be attending the local gymnasium. It wasn't a bad performance and it had some good moments but it was a bit long at 1.5 hours. I'm glad I went to see it though.

That's one of the positives about having a crap-ton of vegetation in the yard--lots of birds and butterflies! It's a pain in the ass to maintain, but sitting outside watching all the different critters is satisfying.

The bottom picture looks like it could have been taken in my yard as there are blue plumbagos like that for the butterflies and bees to peruse.

The most common ones here as well. ATM there is the resident mockingbird(mostly grey) perched on the top of the telephone pole singing the most fabulous arias. Magnificent little songbird.

The other most common ones here are crows and grackles. Then bluejays. It's a special treat when an oriole or a cardinal comes into the yard. I've even seen a male painted bunting out back(usually I only see the drab colored females).

:D

Are you doing any additional exercise(other than your usual walks and bike riding)? I find that cardio makes me absolutely ravenous, but weight lifting has no affect on my appetite.

grade school musical.

Ugh. I used to *hate* having to be in those when I was a kid. Did your nephew have a special part or was he just in the background chorus(if it was that style)?

he'll be attending the local gymnasium

Is that just for the summer?

a bit long at 1.5 hours

Oy! That *is* long! At least you have some nephews to be a good uncle to. :)

No, not really.

Did your nephew have a special part or was he just in the background chorus(if it was that style)?

He was part of a group of four rappers that performed short songs now and then.

Is that just for the summer?

No, I think it's a 5 or 6 year education. Basically from high-school to college level stuff.

At least you have some nephews to be a good uncle to. :)

Thanks. What about you? Got any nephews, nieces that your an good aunt to?

I guess 'gymnasium' means something different over there?

Nope. Although when my friend K and her husband lived down here(around 8 yrs ago) their young son used to call me 'auntie'. It's a nice feeling when a little kid is happy to see you. Funny enough, their anniversary is today...good ol' FB reminded me of that. 15 yrs married...I'm almost envious.

In other news, I've ramped up my workouts a bit. I think I'll go for that miniature super hero look. ;P

Possibly, there's a definition over at wikipedia

their young son used to call me 'auntie'.

Did you ever babysit him? Or did you just do fun things together?

You're not *that* short.;) What have you changed about your workouts?

Yeah, gymnasium over here is the place you go to do sports. Typical American way of dropping the education aspect. That's one of the things here that really gets up my nose--the extreme emphasis and worship of sports. I don't think organized sports should have any place in schools--elementary, university, or otherwise. Why should some moron who can't even read or write get a scholarship to a university just because he can run fast or jump high with a ball? It's all so illogical.

Did you ever babysit him?

No. Of course they might have been afraid of all the things that might happen if that was the case. ;P

Or did you just do fun things together?

Yeah, that one! ;P

You're not *that* short.;)

I really only need 2 more inches. ;D

What have you changed about your workouts?

I've added in the shoulder routine which consists of front and side raises, and then alternating press, all done with dumbbells. I've also added a dumbbell press while lying down, even though I don't have a weight bench. I just use the corner of my bed. It isn't ideal, but it gets the job done. And I've upped the frequency and reps on all this.

Last night I started back on an abs routine. I used to have fabulous abs(I still have some definition), but lack of upkeep is having a negative affect. :( Mustn't have any of that! ;P I'm not going to be one of these people who are all broken down after 40. I'm going to be like that 80 y/o woman who is still doing gymnastics and in better shape than all the young whipper-snappers! LOL

We can all use 2 more inches. Well, I can. ;P

I'm not going to be one of these people who are all broken down after 40.

They do say life begins at 40. Might be 50 for me. Would have preferred 20 or so.

Exactly! Therefore, I need to be fit enough to enjoy it!(You, too!)

So how's the carb experiment going? Still not hungry? Losing any fluff?

Hey, Arekino...don't you peeps rrroll your R's?

Okay, I think. I don't seem to be losing much weight yet. Maybe I need to do more exercise.

don't you peeps rrroll your R's?

My peeps the Dutch? Well, some of us do. In the mid-West people have a more English sounding R but down South people definitely roll it. Why do you ask?

Yes.

Why do you ask?

I was watching some boxing from South Africa the other night. The accents were a hoot. I was trying to determine the recipe for such an accent...add a little Dutch here, throw in some English over there...leads to a funky sound! ;P

And when they got excited my translator blew out and I was like O.o LOL Lots of rolled R's and replacing "th" for a D.

The funny thing is, the only accent that really bugs me is an Australian one.
