Crepes
The other night I had a craving for crepes. I had a recipe for Crepes Suzette but I wasn't going to go through all of that. All I needed was to know what ingredients I needed for the thin pancake portion of the recipe. I went ahead and halved the recipe for my trial run as I didn't want to make a shit-ton in case it didn't turn out well.
As I am practically a professional omelet maker, I should not have been concerned about how they would turn out. They turned out flippin' ace and they were not at all difficult to make! I sauteed some finely diced onion and spinach in a little garlic butter for the filling and improvised a creme sauce. Deee-licious!
I even made a few for my mother the next day and she liked them so much that she insisted that I make a full batch more. So I did! And since I had several pounds of strawberries in the fridge I went ahead and made some dessert crepes with strawberry and whipped cream filling. Also deee-licious!

Those certainly look deee-licious! I'm a bit jealouse now. I'm gonna have ask my parents that we eat pancakes this evening. Two of my nephews will be coming round for dinner so I think they'll be pleased with that as well.
We don't have any strawberries from our garden yet but that won't take much longer as the weather has been perfect for growing them.

What type of omelets do you make?
It's seems that I'm becoming a bit of an Iron Chef in my old age! LOL My mother would always get impatient and act 'put out' if I wanted to help her cook when I was a little kid. That made me not want to cook. But with the business that I was in, and if you recall how I first learned how to make omelets, ;P I discovered that I was quite capable of cooking. Now I like to experiment with all sorts of ethnic foods. :)

Now I am jealous! I'd love to be able to grow fresh strawberries here but the soil is poor and there are too many pests that eat up any crops. :(
What type of omelets do you make?
The kind with eggs. ;P Usually with whatever I have in the fridge or whatever I have a taste for--I usually put sauteed onions, tomato, spinach if I have any, sometimes red or green peppers, and Swiss cheese. It has to be Swiss cheese, though. Cheddar or American is gross in an omelet IMO. And I also put a sprinkle of red pepper flakes to give it a kick. ;P
Lately, I've just been using the onion, spinach, and Swiss cheese combo. :)
Hey Arekino, if you were going to take someone for a nice picnic, which yummy foods would you bring to make sure a gastronomic good time was had? And which location would you pick to ensure delightful visuals?
which yummy foods would you bring
Some sweet fruits, like strawberries, peaches, pineapple. Some sweet & sour gherkins maybe (which combine well with the pineapple) and some pickled onions. Some soft and hard cheeses. Some pâté, deviled eggs. Baguettes.
For a location, there are nice beaches in Zeeland. The grassy dikes there offer a pleasant shelter.
^ Eeeexxxxxxcellent!!! :) You know a thing or two about what makes a good picnic!
sweet & sour gherkins maybe (which combine well with the pineapple)
Good catch! They combine well in sweet and sour pork, too!
That is a most enticing menu. :)
:::makes mental note that if ever in NL must get Arekino to take me for a picnic:::
I especially like a nice cheese selection and pâté! Add some Chimay and it's heaven!
BTW, did you get any pancakes for dinner? If so, any toppings?
must get Arekino to take me for a picnic
I haven't been on a real picnic since I was a child. My family sometimes went to the nearby woods south of town for that. Good times.
Add some Chimay
Isn't white wine the more traditional choice? You can drink what you like of course. :)
BTW, did you get any pancakes for dinner?
Nah, the cook wasn't up for it. Looks like I'm gonna have to make some myself.
How did you start thinking about picnics BTW?
I haven't been on a real picnic since I was a child.
Sounds like you are well overdue! ;)
I'm sure I've told you about the time in Lake Wales(when I was a kid) where the zombie ducks arose from the lake and invaded our picnic. ;P
And then there was the time when I was a senior in h/s and we were required to do "community service" because it looked good on a resume for college.
We went to TY Park to do some touch-up paint on the handicapped parking spaces. I think we did maybe an hour of work and spent the rest of he time screwing around. ;P
We all had to bring our lunches that day. I brought mine in a brown paper sack. There was a pavilion with picnic tables that we all were allowed to use to leave our lunches and assorted crap while we were supposed to be painting. I remember someone running up to me in a panic shouting that a squirrel had stolen my lunch! I ran back to the pavilion and sure enough! The little bastard was running off dragging my lunch. When he saw me running after him, he dropped my lunch and hauled ass up a tree.
The little bastard had bitten into my sandwich a bit(it was a PB & J) and I was advised to throw it away. As it was the only thing I had to eat for lunch, I just tore off the part that was bitten into and ate the unspoiled portion for lunch anyway. :/
My family sometimes went to the nearby woods south of town for that.
I thought that looked like a good place for a picnic--just mind the marauding squirrels! ;P
Isn't white wine the more traditional choice?
Don't know. I'm not much of a wine drinker.
How did you start thinking about picnics BTW?
I was looking around in the basement to cull some crap and rearrange some things and I came across a little picnic basket that my sister gave to my mother. I have no idea where she got it. Probably a junk pile. ;) My mother has a couple nice ones, though, that would be good for a real picnic.
(when I was a kid)
Seems like all the fun things happened when I was a kid. Nothing good after 21.
Nothing good after 21
I'm only slightly better in that department--I had almost a life from 2006-2007. If it wasn't for you, it would be all shit now. :/
In what way was 2006-2007 almost a life?
If it wasn't for you, it would be all shit now. :/
That's flattering and frightening at the same time. A little much responsibility.
BTW you've got mail. :)

After the whole ordeal with Crazy Blogger, I forced myself out of the social anxiety, I made friends with someone at work with similar interests, and we went to hockey, the beach, and biking together. I also had the Colombian ladies as friends. I made efforts to go out and do things with other people as well. Hell, I even went on that long road trip to see my friend from h/s. It was all almost normal. Then, I lost my fun job at that one place at the beginning of '08 and then steadily had less and less work with the other place and now nothing for the last 2 years. I'm back to isolation thanks in part to the old woman.
That's flattering and frightening at the same time. A little much responsibility.
It's not really responsibility. Just don't go croaking on me...I like talking to you! ;P
It was all almost normal.
Oh, now I see what you meant.
Just don't go croaking on me
Ah, so it's till death do us part, hm? ;D

Such a smarty-pants! (No wonder I like ya ! ;P)
Hey Arekino, what sort of frigid temperature is the North Sea near Zeeland in the "summer"? It must be pretty cold as I usually only see Germans who are crazy enough to go in the cold water at the beach. I have lots of 'Germans at the beach' stories. ;P

It's about 12 to 14 degrees Celsius as far as I can tell.

Sounds like you found new material for a blog post. :)
It's about 12 to 14 degrees Celsius as far as I can tell.
Dear God! That is completely insane! And people dip in that?!? O_o
One time when some of my Canadian friends were down for Spring Break, we went to one of the beaches here. I went to test the water and since it was not at least 84 degrees F, I declared that it was too cold for swimming. My one Canadian friends went to test it and declared that it was "warm". What do Canadians know about warm? ;P 80 degrees and above is ideal for swimming. :D
And people dip in that?!?
People, yes, not me though. :)
This Wednesday we're expecting a record 39 degrees Celsius (102.2 degrees Fahrenheit) so maybe a dip in the cold grey/brown sea would not be so bad. What do you Floridians do against extreme heat 'cause I think I can use some tips to prevent meltdown?
What do you Floridians do against extreme heat
We all have air conditioning and we crank it up, pull the shades, and hunker down until December or January. ;P I have heard that most of you folks over there do not have A/C. That is horrifying to a person from The South. What sort of barbarous place are you all living in? ;P In my case, we run the A/C year-round because the old woman insists on it.
My dad OTOH, has been *forced* by the extreme heat of late to turn his A/C on. He is such a cheapskate that he will choose to sweat his ass off in the heat rather than pay a little bit more to the power company.
I can use some tips to prevent meltdown?
You could always get one of those cheap plastic kiddie pools, put it out back, and fill it with some ice water and soak in it. Some ice cold brews or iced tea with lime or lemon is also quite refreshing. Too bad you don't have a nice spring-fed river to dip in...the ones we have in North Florida are ideal for keeping cool during the summer. Maybe you should break out the ol' Speedo and head on down to the local water park? ;D
Oh, BTW, new post scheduled for 2pm!
