Two Critters and a Pineapple

Here are some pics as promised.  It finally stopped raining long enough and I had an opportunity to go out and look for something to get a shot of.  The first is of one of the Golden Silk spiders that have built enormous webs in the front of my house.  There are four of them--two big and two small.  I tried to get a shot of the group but the light wasn't too good and then it started sprinkling so I just settled for the close-up of the biggest spider.

Next we have one of the common striped butterflies that are so numerous in my yard.  I wanted desperately to get a shot of them yesterday as I was out mowing.  There were perhaps eight of them and one solid white one all flying around this shrub with the red flowers.  Red seems to be the favorite color of butterflies.  Then, later on when I was mowing in the very back of the yard, there were at least a dozen of these guys flying around the bougainvillea.

And lastly is one of the pineapples that I have growing out back.  This is the largest of three.  The home grown ones don't seem to get as big as the store bought ones but they are very juicy and have a bit of a pina colada flavor to them.  My pineapples have always tasted this way.  I heard a story not too long ago about some scientists in Australia "developing" a pineapple that tasted of pina colada.  Sorry fellas, mine have tasted like that for many years!  You are not the first!

Looks like you've got loads of stuff going on in your garden. The Golden Silk spider is poisonous, have you ever been bitten? The pineapple doesn't look entirely ripe to me.

On the whole, nice pics. The first two could maybe use some cropping and the pineapple is a little out of focus but nicely done. :)

No. I'm not foolish enough to actually touch one.

It's not. I'll pick it when it turns completely golden-yellow.

Nitpicker! The first two *were* cropped FYI. And it was sprinkling rain so I was trying to be quick about it.

How was you weekend, BTW? Where did you take your car for a spin?

Sorry, I can be that way sometimes. I honestly did like your photographs.

I'm not foolish enough to actually touch one.

I didn't think that you are but having spiders like that around the house would make me make sure that *all* the doors and windows are completely closed and even then I'd still worry about them crawling into my bed. I don't usually hate spiders but big poisonous ones like that creep me out.

Where did you take your car for a spin?

Just around town. Literally. I do like my little red Volkswagen, my loyal automobile. It looks almost new still. Only has a few small dents (one I recently discovered after my brother in law pointed it out to me) and only a few non-essential parts missing. It used to belong to my sister and before that to a cousin of mine. I got it cheap, I guess. My sister couldn't bring herself to ask the full price. It's sixteen years old and I've had it for about six years. Haven't used it much though. Haven gone to many places.
But my car still works. Starts in one go. Drives like a charm.

I was going to point out that you were perpetuating a stereotype there, but I had to run to an appt and didn't have time to get snarky! ;P You Dutch folk and yer complainin'. :D ;P

I'd still worry about them crawling into my bed.

Not to worry...those guys are strictly outdoor spiders. They are perfectly content to make their giant webs outside and just chill until they max out their life span.

BTW, did you know that the gold silk that those guys make has a tensile strength greater than steel? Scientists have actually experimented with making the silk into a lightweight bulletproof fabric. I can tell you from experience that the silk really is exceptionally strong.

my loyal automobile

Yeah, Vee Dubs have a reputation for being good automobiles. :)

It's sixteen years old

It's amazing how long a vehicle will last if you take good care of it and service it regularly. My mother's one is 18 years old and still looks fairly new. It has a few dents but that's from careless bastards in parking lots who fling open their car's door or shove a shopping cart into it. >:(

My car has a few scrapes from road debris and a scrape on the hood from a flying roof tile during a hurricane. And the clear coat finish is starting to peel. That pisses me off. :::shakes fist:::

Hey Arekino, another question for ya! When do you folks over there start learning English? Cuz I get a kick out of Dutch peeps on message boards who apologize for spelling or grammatical errors(which are practically nil). Y'all could teach native English speakers a thing or two about grammar and spelling! :)

Oh, Arekino! I forgot to mention that when I was a kid we used to get these huge Huntsman(or Housekeeping spiders, I guess b/c they were as big as a housekeeper! LOL)spiders in the house. Those suckers had a leg-span the size of a plate--and they were freakin' FAST! And could JUMP! You would be seriously creeped out if you ever saw one of those! LOL I have no idea how they got in--all windows in Florida have screening to keep the critters out. I guess they just opened a door and let themselves in! ;P

Also, I told a bit of a fib earlier...I actually *did* touch a Golden Silk spider before. I petted a tuft of leg fur on one when I was a kid. They're fairly mellow little beasties! ;P

Officially kids these days get taught very basic English when they're about 10 years old. They also learn a lot from surfing the internet and watching movies of course. In my case it was mostly television that helped me learn languages.

You can't see it from where you sit but I often still google English words and expressions because I'm not absolutely certain about their meaning.

When I was 5 y/o in kindergarten, my teacher taught us how to count in Spanish but that was as far as it went. I wish that they had tried teaching us the whole language at that age because it is much easier for young children to learn as opposed to waiting until junior and senior year of h/s.

I actually pick up some words and phrases(Spanish, French, Creole, Hungarian)easier from coworkers than trying to learn from a book.

There are two ladies on the PD forum who if it wasn't for the fact that they came out and said they were Dutch, I would have had no clue and just assumed that they were American(the English they use is more American than UK, NZ, or Oz dialects) because they write so well.

I often still google English words and expressions because I'm not absolutely certain about their meaning.

Sometimes I have to do the same thing when it comes to slang! LOL

You don't live in Florida so you should be safe. ;P

We are well programmed by your entertainment industry. :P

It's okay, we only have small spiders in the Netherlands. I like them, they catch flies and other bugs. And none of them can kill you. :)

Are you still working on the OUAT fan fic?

There are only two varieties of spider here that can kill you--the black widow and the brown recluse. And the brown recluse isn't even native or widespread. They tend to hitch rides in crap from people moving in from out of state. I've never seen a black widow in the wild.

The rest of the "poisonous" varieties can't hurt you too much. Their venom is on par with a bee sting.

I was taking note of all the different spiders just in my yard. There are 9 different ones that I can think of just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are a few more lurking around. ;)

I haven't written anything in months but I have been thinking about different scenarios.

In other news, I have tried my hand at making crepes. They turned out very well and were surprisingly easy to make. Even my mother liked them. :) I made some spinach ones and some dessert ones with fresh strawberries. Very yummy! I got a pic of the strawberry ones. I may post the pic. ;)
