We have always been at war with the Dust Goblins!

I had another skirmish today in the long war of attrition with the Dust Goblins.  For as long as I can remember, they have had the Land of Xul under siege.  Now that I have achieved the title of The Great Xul, it is my responsibility to wage war against them.  They are sneaky, insidious little bastards.  They breech my Kasteel and put their dust everywhere. They even mock me by putting dust on the vacuum.

Today I found a band of Dust Goblins holed up inside my computer hutch, hiding behind my old computer tower.  Filthy beasts.  I promptly dispatched them with the previously mocked vacuum.  Damn Dust Goblins!  They even leave rappelling line hanging from the ceiling!

Anyway, that was what I was up to today.  And I confirmed ONE tidbit of information regarding my fanfic.  I'll probably be waiting at least three weeks until I find out the other pertinent detail which will determine how my little story will go.  I'm still imagining interesting scenes and scenarios.  There will definitely be ice skating involved.

You're a regular Cinderella! :P

I don't remember any fairy tales that involve ice skating. I guess you're adapting a winter tale?

You're a regular Cinderella! :P I hate cleaning but when the dust reaches a certain thickness I feel obligated to do something about it. I did a little crap culling, too. I have a lot more crap that needs to be culled, though.

Well, Storybrooke is supposed to be in Maine, and it always seems cold in the programs. I like skating and I'd like some skating in my story, dammit! ;P And one of my characters likes skating, so there will be skating! And you're right, not too many fairy tales with skating, except for an adaptation of The Ice Queen that I saw one time.

So my dearest Arekino, has anything frozen over enough to go skating where you're at? Do you skate?

I suspect not. There was a guy in the north of the country who went skating on his own and fell through the ice. He didn't survive.

Do you skate?

I can skate and have skated in winters past. ATM I don't have any skates so no skating for me.

an adaptation of The Ice Queen

I bet someone will make a OUAT-on-ice show someday :)

fell through the ice. He didn't survive. That has always been a concern of mine. I've had friends in Canada suggest skating on the Rideau Canal if I ever came to visit in the winter. I know it's a big deal up there and they check for safety and ice thickness, but the thought of falling through would always be in the back of my mind.

I like the other thing they do up in Canada--build a back yard rink during the winter. Less chance of falling through. ;P

ATM I don't have any skates so no skating for me. :( At least you can skate. :) I'd have to question if you were really Dutch if you didn't! ;P

I found a really nice pair of figure skates at a thrift store a few years ago. I bought them because I threw away my hockey skates(they got ruined in the basement when we had some plumbing problems). I haven't had anyone to go skating with, though. :(

IDK, we've had rather warm winters for decades here down south. I bet a lot of kids have never set foot on the ice. The last time for me was when I was maybe 13 or so.

in the basement

I've never lived in a house with a basement. Seems kinda weird such an underground room. What do you use it for? Just storage?

basement Since were I'm at is practically at sea level, it's only partially in the ground. Maybe 1 meter below/1 meter above, and there are small windows on two sides. When I was a kid, we used it as a family room(the actual living room was for display purposes only because my mother didn't want anyone messing it up). Over the years and with the accumulation of crap, it has become a big storage room.

Soooo birthday boy, what is the plan for Sunday? You should at least get a bit of chocolate! I have an ecard scheduled to be delivered in your email.

So you basically used to live in the basement? What was that like?

we used it as a family room

We're keeping it very simple. Just my sister's family will visit for a cup of coffee and a chat.

You should at least get a bit of chocolate!

I made brownies. I added almonds instead of hazelnuts and also anise for extra flavouring.
My dad plans to make an apple pie with a layer of almond paste (or "spijs" in Dutch)

Looking forward to your e-card :)

So you basically used to live in the basement? What was that like? It wasn't some dirt floor dungeon if that's what you're thinking. It was just like being in any other room except you had to go down stairs to get to it. If you have a room upstairs, you go up, downstairs, down. It was just another room.

I have never had anise in brownies before. Do you use anise seed or star anise?

But a hidden room, right? Somewhat secret?

Do you use anise seed or star anise?

Neither. I use these anijsblokjes. They're basically small sugar cubes with anise extract. Usually people put them in warm milk to make a tasty beverage.

Btw these brownies are a lot more chewy. I suspect it's because of the ground almonds I used. This ingredient is also used in bitterkoekjes which are also quite chewy. :)

But a hidden room, right? Somewhat secret? Hidden behind a door. ;P It's not very secret. All the other houses around here are built just the same.

If my mother ever decides to do the decent thing and leave me the house when she croaks, I'd like to put a sliding bookcase in front of the entrance to the basement. Then I can have the hidden lair that I've always dreamed of! Mwa-hahahahahahaha!!!! Maybe I'd do it in black and white like Regina's subterranean lair. I've always had a thing for black and white and I'd like to have one room done up like that.

In the back of the basement, there's a separate little room where the access to the plumbing pipes is. I always thought of it as a little hidden room.

I'd like to get rid of most of the crap down there, re-do the never finished bar, and maybe put in a billiards table like my next-door neighbors had. It could be a really cool space.

anijsblokjes My mother likes anise flavor and that is something that she would like.

Btw these brownies are a lot more chewy. I looooove chewy brownies! I think it's awesome that you like cooking/baking. It's hot. ;P
