You'd think that this would appeal to a narcissist

I just heard about a movie called Her which is a sci-fi about artificial intelligence in the future.  Actually, it's more than just AI, it's AI as applied to companionship.  The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix and in it he is a recently divorced dude who falls in love with an AI "chick" (who is nothing more than a voice on his computer) designed to be a companion and to anticipate his needs.  Sounds pretty cool to me, although I don't think that is anything I'd want.  I think that would get old after a while having "someone" who does everything you want when you "need" it.  In my opinion, it takes the the fun out of interpersonal relationships.  I don't want someone or something that always does what I want and has the ability to anticipate my needs.  It all seems so very narcissistic.  And at its core, narcissism is a very emotionally immature way of being.

However, this is the sort of sci-fi movie that I like because it is thought provoking.  It gets you thinking about the implications of such a thing.  While it seems a really cool thing, ultimately it would seem to cause a retrograde emotional development.  To me it seems like it would make people even more antisocial.  Part of being human is to learn to not be so self centered and to learn to interact with others and to be able to develope the things that make a civil society.

When I first heard of this concept, the first thing that I thought is that it would be perfect for the old woman.  To have a "person" who anticipated all her needs and was programmed to agree with all her opinions and anticipate all her desires would be a dream come true for her.  Of course, I was wrong.  She thinks it's "perverted."  I'm sure she thinks that because it is in the context of a man having the relationship with an AI "woman".  She hates men.  Of course, it could also be that there is a component to narcissism that goes beyond just the self-centeredness and control and that they *know* that they are inflicting mental and emotional pain on others and that is part of the enjoyment--the narcissistic supply--that they get off on.  They are sadists at heart.  They love having power over others, and having an AI "person" to control isn't really control, so there's no narcissistic supply there.

Sigh.

Anyway, this is just the sort of movie that I'd like to see.  A though provoking sci-fi that isn't a ripoff of Voltron with stupid robots blowing shit up and massive CGI abuse.

Movies like that are usually about what it means to be human. Even when an AI is the main character it's not really about the AI but about the human condition.

I'm not sure anyone has ever managed to create a story about AIs that is different. Nobody's ever seen a real AI, so I guess that's why.

Aren't we both not mostly voices in a box to each other BTW? :)

Ya know, I heard about this movie from a TV show where some peeps were sitting around talking about it. I was under the impression that it was an android type AI so I banged out this post in draft. Then I decided that I needed to look it up to get my facts straight(and make a few corrections to the post).

Being that the AI "chick" is just the voice of the OS makes it a little more creepy that the dude would fall "in love" with it.

I think my mother was under the impression that the chick was of the android type, too, because she asked me how it was possible. Then I told her about the Real Girl dolls that have been around for a while. She got mad at me that I would know about such things (LOL) and then demanded to know where I heard about *that*.

Well, I *originally* heard about it on Howard Stern's old radio/TV show. Then I got to thinking that *that* was a looooong time ago, probably 15 years or more! You'd think they'd have animated them by now! ;P

Even when an AI is the main character it's not really about the AI but about the human condition.

Of course. Just like the way Gene Roddenberry's series were. I think all good sci-fi is going to be though provoking intellectual exercises on the human condition.

Which got me thinking...much like the magic in OUAT, all technology seems to come with a price, too! ;D

Nobody's ever seen a real AI, so I guess that's why.

They'd likely go full Terminator on us and kill us all. ;P

No. Because I *could* show up in the flesh at any time--when you least expect it--and throw you to the floor, mount you...and then say, "Well, hello there! Nice to see ya!" LOL (I'm in a funny mood today. ;P ;D )

They're probably working on that in Japan. :P

All advantages have their disadvantages. ;P

The problem with AIs is that it's hard to guess their motives.

I *could* show up in the flesh at any time

Well, a sophisticated enough 3D printer *could* create a real life version of your simulated self anytime as well. :P

I mentioned that specifically to my mother today. And that the Japanese are so obsessed with technology and androids and such that they are becoming hikkikomori and otaku and many are no longer interested in having real relationships with the opposite sex and that the birth rate is declining as a result.

From what I've read about things made from 3D printers is they don't last very long. Besides, the real me is waaaay more fun! ;P

I was thinking about the Technomages from Babylon 5. They were so advanced in their knowledge of science and technology that what they did appeared to be magic. If you could go back in time just a few hundred years with the technology of today, you'd likely be burned as a witch! ::cue Monty Python::

LOL

I suspect it's more complex than that. Besides, given that there are still about 130 million Japanese, I think the country can afford a bit of shrinkage in the population size department.

you'd likely be burned as a witch!

Well, I wouldn't let them. I'd bring some defensive technology with me. All non-lethal of course, wouldn't want to upset the time stream. :P

When is OUAT starting again in your neck of the evil, dark woods BTW ? Is it known?

I was thinking of something kinda interesting--AI, androids(kinda like a Terminator, genetic hybridization/gene splicing, amongst other things are alluded to in the Book of Revelation. :D ;P

Don't they have a somewhat socialist system over there? All such Ponzi schemes require more and more peeps to keep the party goin'. ;P

IIRC, the last time I heard anything, someone said 40 something days. That was a couple weeks ago at least. IDK, maybe end of September or October? At least it will give me something to watch at 8pm on Sunday.

Currently, the only thing on that is any good on Sunday night is Mountain Men at 9pm and Ice Road Truckers at 10pm(although IRT's season finale was last night :( )
