How Xul Acquired the Sword

Once upon a time, in a place known as the Magic City, (okay, this didn't actually happen *in* the Magic City, but Xul is from the Magic City, so there! *ahem*) there was a group of graduating high school students sorcery students, who were supposed to go on a quest to the City That Never Sleeps, in the Empire State, a realm far, far away.  Now it is unknown who chose this realm, for it is a boring realm.  No one wants to see a few tall towers or be pick-pocketed by trolls.  Previous graduating classes got to go to Avalon or even Winterfell, but not us!  Nooooo!!!  None of us had King Midas for a daddy. But I digress.  So because they were lacking in funds, and were seriously discouraged from entering into any deals with Rumplestiltskin, the students instead had to make their quest to the Magic Kingdom, a realm which each had already been to many, many times before.

Now young Xul, being ever so familiar with the Magic Kingdom and the treasures therein, had plotted to acquire a fine sword from the sword maker's shop at Cinderella's castle, without certain other students or the chaperones Overseers finding out.  Now it is well known that when Xul sets her mind at getting something, it is as good as got.

The first night of the adventure, the students were to go to a castle for a banquet in their honor where there was much feasting and surly serving wenches and knights a' jousting.  A good time was had by all.  The next day was the trek deep into the heart of the Kingdom.  Xul, being one to take care of business before pleasure, made great haste to the sword maker's shop at Cinderella's castle and did purchase a fine blade at a reasonable price.  The sword makers were kind enough to gift wrap the sword and keep it safe at the shop so that Xul could spend the day adventuring without being cumbered with such a heavy sword and also because Xul roaming the Kingdom with a sword would be frowned upon, and just as long as it was picked up before closing time.

After much frolicking and adventure that day, Xul returned to the sword maker's to pick up the sword.  Then much haste had to be made to make it for yet another banquet, this time as honored guests of the Polynesians.  With sword in tow, Xul and crew went to rendezvous with the other students at the ferry.   "What is in the box, Xul?" the other students asked.  "It's a lamp," replied Xul.  No one bought that answer and continued to make inquiries.  Xul still persisted with the same answer.

During the banquet one particularly annoying fellow student dared to try to steal the box containing the sword but Xul was too slick for him.  Xul was itching to smite him but did not want to be sent home, so deferred.  After the banquet, and safely back at the inn where the students were staying, Xul revealed the fine sword to her companions.  Oooohs and aaaahs abounded.  Then suddenly, there was a knock at the door.  It was one of the Overseers wanting to know what was *really* in the box, for Xul was not likely to have purchased a lamp unless it contained a genie.  But as it was, this Overseer was a Professor of History and the Ancient Scrolls and sympathetic to the cause and did not report Xul to admin.  Quite to the contrary, this Overseer did muchly approve.

Three more days of adventure were had in the Kingdom and then the students were returned to their home realm.  And this is how Xul came to possess that sword.

BTW, Happy Halloween, dearies!

Cool story. It says a lot about who you were as a young adolescent. Kinda headstrong and a little rebellious. How did your parents (and I assume your sister) react when you brought the sword home with you?

I like the creative writing aspect of this post. Maybe you should write more of this stuff.

Happy Halloween to you too! Again. ;)

How did your parents (and I assume your sister) react when you brought the sword home with you? Well, since my sister was 19 years older than me, she didn't live with us. I don't think my parents were too alarmed. It was my third sword, after all. Kinda went with the territory. It's a funny thing, back when I was in school I lived a sort of double life. I was one way with my friends and another with my parents.

I like the creative writing aspect of this post. Thanks! I was trying to give it a humorous classic fairy tale kinda vibe.

Maybe you should write more of this stuff. Now that's something that I would have never thought possible back in school. Writing assignments used to stress me out something fierce. Until my senior year of h/s, that is. I don't recall what changed for me. Either a good teacher or maybe a 'don't give a shit any more' attitude. Oh! I know! It *had* to be my friend Karen. I met her in my junior year and since she is from Canada she used to write letters back home to her friends(back in the olden days when people used to write letters on paper and send them via snail mail). I remember me asking her who she was writing to one time and then I said I wanted to write something. She looked at me like a was the biggest loon but then let me write something anyway. I'm sure it was something smart-assedy. Well, that started a thing with us--epic, humorous, creatively written letters. So I guess that's where I got my creative writing mojo. I'm not naturally a writer but I am naturally a smart-ass. (I think I got a lot of that from my sister.) So when I combine being a smart-ass with the written word it just sorta works.

Anyway, I'm glad you liked it. I promised myself that I wouldn't start writing fan fiction, but who knows? ;P

And again, a Happy Halloween to you!

So how many swords do you have ATM?

I was one way with my friends and another with my parents.

I guess a lot of teenagers are like that.

Magic Kingdom

Have you ever gone there again?

So how many swords do you have ATM? Four swords and a bat wing battle ax that is literally sharp enough to shave with. Keep your blades sharp and your wit sharper, I always say! LOL A few daggers, a strange fantasy bladed thingy, a morningstar flail, shuriken, nunchaku, throwing knives, etc. I almost bought a genuine grim reaper style scythe that was at the local kringloopwinkel for $5 but I didn't. It was cool, though. :)

Have you ever gone there again? Nope.

Reading this description, the first thing that came to mind was the Glaive from the movie Krull but then I googled for images of "fantasy bladed weapon" and it turns out there are lots more sharp pointy thingies out there. :o

In other news, I am writing...well devising, really...a fan-fic character/scenario thingy for OUAT. It totally rawks! My new character is going to be the Flying Dutchman, but compiled from various historical versions. There was some discussion on another website of who would make a good love interest for Regina/what new character would you like to see introduced and that was my first thought, just combining the two. There are lots of things in the Dutchman mythology that would fit perfectly in a OUAT character. Lets hope the writers take my idea and then pay me loads of moolah! LOL One can hope, eh?

Interesting. What do you like about the character? (or do you not want to give anything away AKA spoilers?)

One can hope, eh?

One can, indeed.

What do you like about the character? Well, there are a few things in the legends that would fit well with how the current writers are doing the realm jumping thing. Firstly, the original Captain, Barend Fokke, that the story originated from, used to make trips from Amsterdam to Java and back in record time, so much so that people said he was in league with the devil(or maybe Rumplestiltskin!). Secondly, he was strong willed and would have his own way in spite of the devil(Or Rumps, my kinda guy). He was a helluva captain and had a vessel loaded with great wealth.(Could have been deals with Rumps.) Thirdly, according to wiki 'hurricanes are frequently ushered in by the appearance of a spectre-ship'(or maybe vice-versa?) The latest storm, Hurricane Sandy, that just hit New England made me think that maybe the ship needed a storm that size to get through, the idea of using a hurricane as a portal between worlds.(A kick-ass idea if I do say so myself! ;P)

There was a movie called Pandora and the Flying Dutchman(a romantic love story)which was done by MGM. Disney now owns MGM, hence the use of the old-school MGM character of Frankenstein, so The Dutchman would be do-able. (Probably won't happen though since they already have Hook. Another Captain character might be redundant.)

Anyway, this is my character so who cares what they do! LOL So since he's my character, I'm making him handsome(Like dark hair and blue eyes and NOT scrawny, maybe built like Gerard Butler. I'm soooo tired of wimpy looking male actors)charming, cunning, and good at making da moneyzzz, and determined, with a devilish sense of humor. Also hellbent on getting revenge on Rumplestiltskin for getting him trapped in another realm for nearly 300 years. Then he can team up with Regina to get revenge on Rumps. Mua-hahahahaha!!!!

Does the show have a Peter Pan character ATM? I can't see Hook work without Pan being there as well.

Damn, I've got the flu. It's going around apparently. It's like I never had that flu shot. :(

I so hate being sick. Ah well, t'is the season for sneezing.

Some people are already gaga over Hook. He's not hideous. He has the dark hair and blue eyes and a nice furry chest but he's a bit too slim for my tastes. And his character seems a little sleazy.

None of the male characters are particularly compelling IMO except for Rumps, but then that's just excellent acting on Robert Carlyle's part. The other male actors are just kinda meh. Regina rules(puns intended)because Lana Parrilla is a kick-ass actress, and Megan Ory as Red is prolly my second favorite female(she was good on that show True Justice with Steven Seagal), then Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow. The other chicks are just kinda meh, too.

Sorry to hear you have a flu. What was the point of that shot again? Anyway, hope you are feeling better soon! (((hugs)))

I have the beginnings of a *thing* ATM. My right eye and my right nostril seem to have a bug, it's all up in that sinus, but my immune system seems to be holding it off. I've been having a twinge since yesterday but it hasn't developed into a full blown anything yet. I sooo hate being sick, too.

How did your mom react to the elections? :)

Hey, there. I'm feeling much better now. How's your "thing" developing? Glad you're feeling better. I got tired of the the twinge and gave myself a few drops of saline solution in my eyes and then snorted a big squirt up my nose and it seemed to do the trick. I was right as rain the next day.

Are you still working on your fan fiction? Nah. I guess I have a short attention span.

How did your mom react to the elections? :) About the same way I reacted to it. I guess we are now officially France. And the way people voted for the local issues still has me scratching my head. Bunch of fucking dumbasses.

Ah, good.

Nah. I guess I have a short attention span.

Seriously? It sounded like such a good idea. I mean, if you have the attention span to write one long-ish post then surely you can write a short-ish story? Oh, well.

I guess we are now officially France.

Are you sure you're not officially Canada? :P

the local issues

Immigration issues?

It sounded like such a good idea. You think so? It seems a lot of effort for a small result.

Are you sure you're not officially Canada? :P That's probably closer to reality. We are lacking the cool old buildings like France.

Immigration issues? No, tax issues. People down here seem to be incredibly stupid and want their taxes increased. I just can't understand it. Then again, the way most of the different issues were worded, you'd need a Philadelphia lawyer to understand them. They were looooong and written in lawyer doublespeak. I have a good amount of schooling in poli-sci and govt so *I* understood, but most morons wouldn't have a clue, I imagine.

It didn't seem to me that you thought it would be for a "small result" when you started it. It totally rawks is what you said. What changed?

We are lacking the cool old buildings

Meh, most of the really old stuff in Europe got bombed to bits in some war or another. I know the remainder are tourist fodder but I don't think old buildings are what make Europe Europe (or France France).

But then, I guess, neither do you.

No, tax issues.

I see. So will you yourself be paying more taxes in the near future, you think?

PS: Petrichor has written a blogpost.

What changed? Well, unfortunately for me, I'm not a paid writer for that show. I could have the greatest idea evar but what does that get me? I'm not going to go to the trouble of researching material for a character and making a cool story if there's no real payoff. I'd think it was cool and you'd probably like it but then what? It's not like Star Trek where they accepted scripts from the general public.

I don't think old buildings are what make Europe Europe (or France France). Not even outrageous accents? It has to be the outrageous accents! ;P

So will you yourself be paying more taxes in the near future, you think? Oh, absolutely. People just don't seem to understand that "bond issues" don't pay for themselves. The money fairy just doesn't come along and wave a wand and everything is paid for. NO! Your taxes will be raised to pay for the spending, morons!

Petrichor has written a blogpost. Yeah, I saw it last night. I was just too tired to comment.

Soooooo, is it freezing cold where you are at yet? It was cooler than usual today, and downright chilly when I went outside a while ago. Woo-hoo!!!

if there's no real payoff.

You mean as in money? True, but you've got to start somewhere. The payoff for writing short stories (that perhaps few people may read) is writing experience. Something to show for if you ever want to apply for a job as a professional writer.

It has to be the outrageous accents! ;P

Isn't that what makes the USA the USA? ;P

Your taxes will be raised to pay for the spending, morons!

Hm, yeah, people usually only imagine other peoples' taxes to be raised.

is it freezing cold where you are at yet?

We've had a few cold nights and I've added a duvet to my bed. As long as it's dry outside I'm not complaining. Woo-hoo!!!

Something to show for if you ever want to apply for a job as a professional writer. Writing professionally is not something I ever wanted to do. I've never been particularly good at writing. I only started this blog as a place to rant.

Anyway, in researching for the character that I was thinking about, since I hate things that are just slapped together with no foundation in reality, I was getting too involved with "working" on it. For accuracy's sake I like to research things. Then I ended up getting involved in physics and quantum theory and all that mathy stuff and it just makes my head hurt. Now my fairy tale is venturing into the sci-fi realm and my fun idea is now all involved because I get anal retentive about details. Phooey!

Isn't that what makes the USA the USA? ;P Yeah, English spoken with various European accents. LOL One of the best descriptions of a regional accent I've ever heard was New Yorkese is basically English spoken with a Dutch accent and a grudge. It's hilarious because it's true! LOL

As long as it's dry outside I'm not complaining. Yeah, ya got that right! It's been really nice here for the past several days.

So, have your woods lost all their leaves and have that cool creepy bare effect or do you have evergreens there? Any kabouter sightings? What about giant wild hoggies or werewolves? Maybe you could tell me a good story!

LOL How did you end up there? Couldn't you've just stuck to "T'was the magick that done it, gov'ner!" ?

and a grudge

Yes, darned. If only them red coats hadn't taken New Amsterdam from us the Dutch would be rulin' the seven seas now. :P

have your woods lost all their leaves

Yes, that started a couple of weeks ago actually. My old colleagues have cleaned the streets of them though. They're probably compost now (the leaves, not my colleagues).

Maybe you could tell me a good story!

Not so coincidentally (as I was somewhat inspired by your efforts to write le fan-fiction) some story ideas did spring to mind the last couple of days. Nothing like OUAT though.

LOL How did you end up there? Well, the first thing I thought of with all the portal business was 'It's a wormhole!!!' and then it got me thinking about Farscape and all the wormhole business that went on there. Then there's the business about the Dutchman being aloud to find love every seven years from that old movie and then I got obsessed with how long wormholes stay open/if you go through a wormhole and back again how much time has elapsed on the one side as opposed to the other and then it got into time travel and ya see how involved it is now? I can't just go 'It's magic!' and leave it at that, although that's probably what I should do. But wormholes! They're so cool! And the possibilities! LOL

them red coats Pain in the ass, weren't they? Seems everyone has had some issues with 'em, 'cept we took care of our little problem! LOL

They're probably compost now (the leaves, not my colleagues). The colleagues being compost would make a good scary story. Maybe some evil kabouter got 'em!

some story ideas did spring to mind the last couple of days. Oooh! Oooh! I'd like to hear 'em!
