Zednik Injury

I can't believe this has happened for a second time in Buffalo. Sunday night, in a game between the Florida Panthers and the Buffalo Sabres, Richard Zednik's carotid artery was severed by teammate Olli Jokinen's skate during a collision. It was absolutely horrendous.

Ironically, I had mentioned in the comments of my Hockey Pictures post the first time something like this had happened- to Clint Malarchuk- the Sabres goalie- back in 1989.

It has been reported that Zednik lost a half gallon of blood from his injury, but thankfully, due to the immediate medical attention that he received, will make a full recovery. Amazing, since the artery was severed 3/4 of the way through.

Here is the live footage of the accident:

In an interview with Clint Malarchuk, the former Sabres' goalie said, "Funny, but I've seen my accident, oh, maybe 100 times. You go to YouTube, punch in my name and you get three different angles of it. Pretty graphic stuff. I've seen it so many times I've almost become detached from it.

"But this ... ? I couldn't bring myself to look."

On March 22, 1989, during a game between the Buffalo Sabres and the St. Louis Blues, Steve Tuttle's skate severed the former Sabres goalie's jugular vein. Blood poured from Malarchuk as a trainer pressed a towel against his neck. Malarchuk needed 300 stitches to close the gash.

At the time, there were reports that 11 fans fainted and two more had heart attacks when Malarchuk's macabre accident took place. Three players vomited on the ice.

It really was horrific. Far worse than Zednik's injury, in my opinion. Take a look for yourself.
